The Toronto Blue Jays are entering another important stretch of the season with Andrés Giménez serving as a key piece of their infield. The 28-year-old has provided steady defense at shortstop while also becoming a more productive hitter in recent weeks, giving Toronto another experienced bat as it pushes toward the postseason.
Giménez entered Saturday batting .241 with eight home runs, 50 RBIs and 34 runs scored this season. He had also been swinging the bat well, hitting .308/.351/.423 with eight RBI and six stolen bases over a 14-game stretch, before a recent setback sidelined him for four straight games.
However, Giménez was not included in Toronto’s starting lineup for the second straight game against the Seattle Mariners. The decision comes after he recently dealt with a right hamstring issue.
Giménez initially suffered the injury during Toronto’s Aug. 20 game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He was removed after running out a ground ball and missed the series against the New York Yankees and Tuesday’s opener against the Kansas City Royals.

Giménez returned to the lineup Aug. 25 against Kansas City. He went 2-for-3 with a double and a strikeout, but went hitless the following night.
Toronto has relied on Ernie Clement to cover shortstop when Giménez has been unavailable, with Charles McAdoo also receiving opportunities at second base.
