Blue Jays Make Announcement on Starting Pitcher Monday

The Toronto Blue Jays wrapped up a four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics on Sunday with an 8-4 win at Rogers Centre, their fifth straight win and sixth in seven games.

The Jays' starting rotation struggled in the final three games of the series, giving up 18 combined runs as part of what has been a work in progress for manager John Schneider's team.

On Monday, the Jays made an announcement on a pitcher who played in eight games and started two for the ballclub, after receiving word on his next career path.

"ROSTER MOVE: RHP Jose Urena has cleared waivers and elected free agency," the Jays' X account wrote on Monday.

The right-hander was designated for assignment two days prior to make room for lefty Easton Lucas, who had a rough month of April but bounced back with 4.2 scoreless innings against the Athletics on Saturday, May 31.

Urena, a native of Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, pitched five scoreless innings in his last three outings, making him a strong possibility to land with another Major League organization.

Toronto currently ranks 20th in the Majors in earned run average at 4.03, although they have shined in the strikeouts department with 537 so far on the year.

Next up for Schneider's team is a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies at Rogers Centre followed by three road games against the Minnesota Twins and another three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bowden Francis is expected to take the mound on Tuesday against Zack Wheeler of the Phillies, with tickets going for as little as ten dollars.
