The Toronto Blue Jays carried momentum into Saturday after a strong Opening Day win, returning to Rogers Centre with a chance to start the 2026 season 2–0 against the Athletics. After Kevin Gausman set the tone the night before, all eyes shifted to another new-look piece of Toronto’s rotation.
Saturday marked the debut of Dylan Cease, who was acquired in the offseason on a seven-year, $210 million contract, the largest free-agent deal in franchise history. The deal, which carries an average annual value of $30 million, immediately positioned Cease as a cornerstone of the franchise.
Cease arrived in Toronto with expectations of forming one of the most formidable rotations in baseball alongside established arms. And he wasted no time delivering in his first game.
In the sixth inning, he struck out catcher Shea Langeliers for his 12th strikeout of the game, setting a new franchise record for most strikeouts in a Blue Jays debut.
Shortly after, the Blue Jays acknowledged the milestone on social media, posting:
“TWELVE STRIKEOUTS FOR CEASE. That’s a Blue Jays debut RECORD!”

Cease concluded his night with 5.1 innings pitched, one earned run, 12 strikeouts, three hits allowed, two walks and 24 whiffs.
The outing came just one day after Kevin Gausman recorded 11 strikeouts on Opening Day, giving the Blue Jays back-to-back historic pitching performances to begin the season.
Before joining Toronto, Cease had already established himself as one of baseball’s premier strikeout arms in seven combined seasons with the Chicago White Sox and San Diego Padres. He has recorded 200+ strikeouts in five consecutive seasons and finished near the top of Cy Young voting multiple times, including a runner-up finish in 2022.
Now with the Blue Jays, Cease is expected to provide ace-level production, deepen an already elite rotation, and play a key role in the club’s push for another postseason run. If his debut is any indication, Toronto may have added another dominant force to its pitching rotation.
