Blue Jays Make Move After Concerning Trey Yesavage News

Trey Yesavage’s latest setback has left the Toronto Blue Jays’ pitching staff with one fewer option. The rookie underwent surgery Tuesday to repair the meniscus in his left knee after leaving his Aug. 4 start against Houston after only two innings. Manager John Schneider said Yesavage will be week to week, and the club has not ruled out a return this season.

Yesavage went 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 93⅔ innings prior to his injury. His absence has come at a crucial time, with Toronto’s pitching depth running thin, especially after Kevin Gausman was traded to the Chicago Cubs at the deadline.

The Blue Jays have now made a move to add some experience to the group.

Toronto claimed veteran reliever Paul Sewald off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert. Arizona designated the 36-year-old for assignment after his season took a sharp turn following a strong start.

Sewald recorded 24 saves for Arizona this season, but finished his time with the Diamondbacks carrying a 6.23 ERA. He was particularly effective early, posting a 3.08 ERA through his first 26⅓ innings before struggling badly over his final stretch.

The veteran still brings plenty of experience to Toronto. Sewald helped the Diamondbacks reach the 2023 World Series after joining them at that year’s trade deadline, and he has also pitched for the New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers during his MLB career.

The Blue Jays are entering Wednesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox at 58-63 and 2.5 games behind the final American League wild Ccard spot after winning nine of their last 13 games.

Sewald does not need to be the pitcher he was at his peak for this move to matter. If Toronto can get useful innings from him, he gives a bullpen that needs help another experienced arm while the Blue Jays try to turn their recent surge into a playoff push.
