Blue Jays Make Roster Decision After Season-Ending News

The Toronto Blue Jays have had somewhat of a nightmare 2026 MLB season. As of Aug. 5, they are 54-61 and last place in the American League East. This puts them 14 games back of the first-place Tampa Bay Rays.

Their American League pennant defense has not gone to plan, as they were sellers at the trade deadline. They moved notable players such as Kevin Gausman, Daulton Varsho and Jeff Hoffman.

With not much hope left to make a run for the postseason, the front office has turned to acquiring pitchers who will at the very least eat some innings. They started by nabbing Jameson Taillon in a trade with the Cubs on Sunday.

Wednesday has brought along some fresh news, even following the trade deadline. According to the team’s official X account, they have put left-hander Patrick Corbin on the 60-day injured list and scooped up right-hander Matt Waldron from waivers.

For Corbin, he has been dealing with a left teres major strain suffered on July 22. Originally put on the 15-day injured list, it seems as though it is a bigger deal than first thought. The 37-year-old will now miss the remainder of the season.

The new acquisition Matt Waldron comes off waivers from the San Diego Padres. The 29-year-old first broke onto the scene in 2023, featuring one of baseball’s only knuckleballs.

In 2023 and 2024, Waldron was mediocre at best, pitching to a 4.79 ERA in 32 starts. The past couple seasons have not been as kind, as he has only appeared in 11 games for a total of 37 ⅓ innings pitched. Toronto manager John Schneider will have to get creative with his usage.

Waldron spent a lot of that other time in the Padres’ minor league system, mostly at Triple-A El Paso. He has had some success there this season, throwing 27 innings with 22 strikeouts and a 1.33 ERA.

The Blue Jays have an excess of starting pitching. Since Waldron took Corbin’s roster spot specifically, that likely means that he will be in a long relief role at the back end of the bullpen. He has a 7.16 ERA in 32 ⅔ MLB innings this season.
