Blue Jays Make Roster Decision Before Rangers Game

The Toronto Blue Jays recalled left-handed pitcher Adam Macko from Triple-A Buffalo and designated right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson for assignment ahead of Friday's series opener against the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre.

The move gives Toronto another fresh arm in the bullpen while creating a 40-man roster spot the club expects to use in the coming days for infielder Sean Keys.

Macko, 25, earned another opportunity after making a strong impression during his first big-league stint this season. Across 12 appearances, he posted a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings with 12 strikeouts and a 0.92 WHIP, giving the Blue Jays a swing-and-miss option from the left side.

His earlier demotion came down to roster flexibility rather than performance, and manager John Schneider made that clear at the time. Friday's recall reflects the same confidence in his ability.

Macko was acquired from the Seattle Mariners alongside Erik Swanson in the November 2022 trade that sent Teoscar Hernandez to Seattle. He has steadily climbed through Toronto's farm system since then and has developed into one of the organization's more promising pitching prospects.

As for Woods Richardson, he spent the second half of June providing organizational depth after returning to Toronto earlier this month. The Blue Jays ultimately chose roster flexibility over retaining another right-handed arm. He will now go through the standard waiver process, where another club could claim him, a trade could materialize, or he could remain in the organization if he clears.

The Blue Jays enter the Rangers series with a 39-42 record, sitting third in the American League East and having dropped three straight. Getting back above .500 is the immediate priority, and every roster decision carries more weight as the calendar moves closer to July.

Toronto recently lost veteran Max Scherzer to the injured list with back spasms, increasing the importance of having reliable bullpen arms capable of covering meaningful innings. Macko's ability to miss bats gives Schneider another middle-inning option while reducing pressure on the higher-leverage relievers.

Friday's series opener features left-hander Patrick Corbin against Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi at Rogers Centre.
