Just like that, Yimi Garcia is back on the Injured List.
An hour before Saturday afternoon’s game, the Toronto Blue Jays announced that they had placed Garcia on the 15-day Injured List with a left ankle sprain. Taking his spot on the 26-man roster is Robinson Pina.

This is terrible luck for Garcia, as he was recently activated from the Injured List last Wednesday, with the Blue Jays optioning Mason Fluharty to Triple-A in his place. Garcia’s only appearance was on the same day, giving up a game-tying home run to Aaron Judge while throwing 30 pitches. Before that, Garcia’s last outing was on May 22nd.
Garcia, 34, was signed in the off-season. It’s his fourth consecutive season pitching with the Jays, but he spent a little bit of time with the Seattle Mariners as the Blue Jays traded him for Jonatan Clase and Jacob Sharp. So far this season, the right-handed pitcher has a 3.86 ERA and 3.80 FIP in 21 innings pitched, with a career-worst 13.3 BB%.
This isn’t the only foot injury a Blue Jays player has suffered in recent times. Andres Gimenez missed a couple of games in the New York Yankees series due to a jammed foot trying to catch the ball on a stolen base attempt. He was pulled from Friday’s game after running first to third and went for an MRI after the game. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. missed Friday’s game after fouling a ball off his foot on Thursday.
As for Pina, he was acquired from the Miami Marlins via trade, with the Blue Jays giving up relief prospect Colby Martin. Pina pitched just one big league inning, giving up a home run in his June 20th appearance with the Miami Marlins, before being designated for assignment. So far in the minor leagues this season, the right-handed pitcher has a 3.51 ERA and 3.83 FIP in 59 innings pitched.
Pina is active for Saturday’s game, but with Ryan Burr nearing the end of his rehab assignment, there’s a chance Pina will be optioned for Burr when that move is needed.
