The defending American League champion Toronto Blue Jays have had a barrage of injuries in their starting rotation this season.
The Blue Jays are currently without Dylan Cease, Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer, Cody Ponce and Jose Berrios who are all on the IL. Berrios, of course, underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery recently, and Cody Ponce had season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL.
The good news is that Cease, Bieber and Scherzer are all on the mend and should be back soon.
Scherzer (forearm, ankle), according to Blue Jays manager John Schneider, will begin a rehab assignment with Buffalo on Sunday. He could throw between 45-60 pitches, but it depends on how he feels. The expectation is that the righty will throw another rehab start next Friday, but Scherzer and Toronto are taking it one outing at a time.

Schneider says Scherzer will likely throw another rehab outing next Friday but “he’s taking it one start at a time.”
Prior to the Blue Jays' matchup with the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, Schneider also told reporters that Cease (hamstring strain) has played catch the past few days and is feeling better. Toronto is hoping he will throw a bullpen session this weekend in Baltimore.
Cease hurt his hamstring in his May 24 start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He landed on the IL the following day.

Shane Bieber (elbow) remains on track to continue his rehab assignment with the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday.
As for Bieber (elbow), he is still on track to continue his rehab assignment with Dunedin this Sunday. Bieber began his rehab assignment on May 25 with the Florida Complex League, tossing two scoreless innings.
Bieber has not pitched this season due to lingering elbow inflammation after he returned from Tommy John surgery last summer. The right-hander was traded to the Blue Jays by the Cleveland Guardians at last year's trade deadline.
The third place Blue Jays enter play on Thursday with a 27-29 record and 8.5 games back of the Tampa Bays in the American League East division. If they can tread water until their rotation gets healthier they might be able to make another run in a weak AL.
