Ryan Borucki is back with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Before Tuesday’s game, the Blue Jays announced that they’ve recalled Borucki to the big leagues. The corresponding moves to get him on the 28-man saw the Jays option Easton Lucas. To add Borucki to the 40-man roster, they briefly added Robinson Piña to the big league roster, then transferred him to the 60-day Injured List.

Borucki was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 15th round in the 2012 draft. The left-handed pitcher made his debut in 2018, authoring a 3.87 ERA and 3.80 FIP in 97.2 innings pitched. After an injury-filled 2019 season, Borucki moved to the bullpen to begin the 2020 season, posting a 2.70 ERA and 3.61 FIP in 16.2 innings pitched.
Unfortunately, he never reached that level of success in his final two seasons with the Blue Jays, with the Jays designating him for assignment in 2022. They traded him to the Seattle Mariners, and Borucki found his way to the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 2023 season.
In 2023, he posted a 2.45 ERA and 3.50 FIP in 40.1 innings, with a 21.7 K% and 2.6 BB%, his best season to date. Injuries plagued his 2024 season, and he’s struggled in 2025, posting a 5.28 ERA and 4.34 FIP in 30.2 innings pitched, leading the Pirates to DFA him.
Borucki signed a minor league deal and has now returned to the team that drafted him. As for Lucas, the Jays recalled him before August 30th’s game, but he didn’t appear in either of the two games he could have when called up. This season, the left-handed pitcher has a 6.66 ERA and 5.39 FIP in 24.1 innings pitched. He’s found more success in Triple-A, as he has a 3.84 ERA and 3.99 FIP in 58.2 innings pitched.
Piña was acquired in a trade with the Miami Marlins back in June, and he pitched just two and a third innings while giving up four runs, two of which were earned. He has a right elbow sprain, so don’t expect him to pitch again this season.
Will this transaction help a floundering Blue Jays’ bullpen? Time will tell.
