Blue Jays Receive Unfortunate Bo Bichette News on Thursday

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette is having a strong start to the 2025 MLB season. Posting career-lows in several statistical categories last season, Bichette finished the year with a 72 OPS+ in 81 games played. Having never posted an OPS+ lower than 121 prior to last season, it was an unusual campaign for the 5-foot-11 infielder.

Through seven games this season, Bichette is hitting .310 and has scored four runs for the Blue Jays. It is a big year for the 2016 second round pick, as he is set to enter free agency at the end of this season.

Like his teammate Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bichette has not reached a long-term agreement with the team he debuted for in 2019. Instead, he is not only expected to enter free agency, but leave the Blue Jays for another team. This is the unfortunate news Toronto received on Thursday via Jon Heyman of the New York Post

The MLB insider wrote, "Word is Bo Bichette is destined for free agency, however, and likely to leave."

After how last season went, Bichette will need to regain his All-Star form in order to maximize his free agency. That said, even if the right-handed slugger can put together a season close to his career averages, he is likely to land a lucrative deal as a team's shortstop of the future.

According to Heyman, that team is not expected to be the Blue Jays, which is bad news for a Toronto team looking to maintain relevance in the American League East.
