The carousel of relief pitching has continued for the Toronto Blue Jays.

After optioning Brendon Little and Lázaro Estrada to call up Joe Mantiply and Austin Voth on Sunday morning, the team announced on Monday afternoon that Voth has been DFA’d. In his place, left-handed reliever Josh Fleming has been added to the Blue Jays 40-man roster and will be active for Monday’s game.

That game happens to be a World Series rematch against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fleming’s debut season was in 2020 with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he had a 2.78 ERA and 4.40 FIP in 32.1 innings pitched, his best season in terms of ERA. Fleming appeared in two games during the 2020 postseason, as the Rays eventually lost to the Dodgers in the World Series.

The left-handed pitcher pitched the next three seasons with the Rays, logging a career-high 104.1 innings pitched with the team in 2021, where he had a 5.09 ERA and 4.27 FIP. Fleming appeared in 35 innings in 2022 and 51.2 innings in 2023. The 29-year-old was eventually DFA’d, claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies, but was non-tendered.

Fleming’s 2024 season in the big leagues was spent with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he had a 4.02 ERA and 4.76 FIP in 31.1 innings over 25 starts. In the summer, he was DFA’d and finished his season out in the Seattle Mariners’ minor league system. That’s where he spent the 2025 season as well, posting a 4.91 ERA and 5.48 FIP in 84.1 innings pitched over 47 outings with the Mariners’ Triple-A team.

This past off-season, Fleming signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays, posting a 4.50 ERA and 4.65 FIP in eight innings. He made a start with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, going three and two-thirds innings with one run allowed and not allowing a walk.

Fleming gives the Blue Jays some length out of the bullpen, which is what the Blue Jays needed with four of their eight starters out with injury. Voth pitched in Sunday’s game, allowing an earned run in his two and two-thirds innings. We’ll see if he gets claimed off waivers.

Additionally, it was reported that recently acquired Tyler Fitzgerald also has a locker in the team’s clubhouse, indicating another move could be on the horizon. Addison Barger was pulled from Sunday’s game with bilateral ankle discomfort. Let’s hope that isn’t the corresponding move, as the Jays cannot afford any more injuries.
