The Toronto Blue Jays have made their final pick of the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday.

With the 131st overall pick, the Blue Jays selected prep catcher Will Brick, a right-handed batting backstop that attended Christian Brothers High School in Memphis.

Standing at 6’2”, 195 lbs, Brick is considered one of the best catching prospects available in the draft, and the best prep catcher in the draft. A right-handed batter, Brick just turned 18 years old last month and was originally set to go in the 2027 draft before reclassifying for this one.

Brick ranks as MLB Pipeline’s 46th-best draft eligible prospect. The bat isn’t a strong suit, and it was noted on MLB.tv’s broadcast that he had a disappointing season. There’s some swing-and-miss in his game and he isn’t an aggressive hitter, though he has some pop in his bat. Pipeline grades his fastball at 45, while his power sits 50.

What stands out about Brick is his arm. Graded 65 by Pipeline, he has terrific pop times which is paired with a strong arm. Defensively, there’s potential to be a good all around defensive catcher as well as he gains experience blocking and receiving at the professional level.

It’s been a while since the Blue Jays went with a prep catcher in the draft, just the second time since the 2020 draft. Four years ago, the Blue Jays drafted Sammy Hernandez with the 428th overall pick. He eventually signed and was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Génesis Cabrera.

The last time the Blue Jays selected a prep catcher as high as Brick was back in 2017, when they selected Hagen Danner with the 61st overall pick. Granted, Danner eventually went on to make his brief big league debut as a relief pitcher.

As for the last time the Jays drafted a prep catcher who signed and actually became a big league regular, you have to go back to 2013 when they selected Danny Jansen with the 475th overall pick.

Improving their catching prospect pool has been an area of focus for the Blue Jays. Last season, they traded for Brandon Valenzuela, who has become the team’s backup catcher. Just a few days ago, they traded Tommy Nance and some international bonus pool money to the Minnesota Twins for Ryan Sprock.

Their next pick is on Sunday morning, as they’ll select 164th overall.

Other draft picks…
