The Toronto Blue Jays have picked two catchers in their last three picks.

With the 532nd overall pick, the Jays selected Washington State University catcher Will Cresswell. The 21-year-old is a four-year senior and spent his entire collegiate career with Washington State.

Unlike Jaxson West, Cresswell has a slightly more impactful bat. In his rookie season, Cresswell only received 79 plate appearances, batting below the Mendoza line and finishing with a 41 wRC+. It was much of the same for the 2023 season, as he slashed .194/.308/.408 with five home runs in 122 plate appearances for a 62 wRC+. In 2024, Cresswell slashed .242/.337/.286 with a home run in 104 plate appearances.

The catcher finally broke out in 2025 with Washington State, as he slashed .329/.404/.523 with five home runs in 184 plate appearances for a 112 wRC+. It’s not particularly great for a fourth-year college prospect, but there’s a chance he’s solid defensively as well.

This is the second consecutive draft the Blue Jays have selected two catchers, as they picked Aaron Parker and Brock Tibbitts in the 2024 draft. It’ll be interesting to see where Cresswell is placed. Out of any position in the farm system, catching is by far the weakest, as their only catching prospect around the top 30 is Edward Duran.

Overall, it was a rather weak draft for backstops, with none around where the Blue Jays picked with their first two picks of the draft.
