Blue Jays Sign Daz Cameron To Minors Contract

The Blue Jays signed outfielder Daz Cameron to a minor league contract earlier this week, according to Cameron’s MLB.com profile page.  The signing comes a few weeks after Cameron was released by the KBO League’s Doosan Bears, and the Jays have assigned Cameron to their Florida Complex League club.

Despite Cameron’s strong .287/.360/.473 slash line over 314 KBO plate appearances, most of that production came earlier in the season.  The Bears opted to part ways with the outfielder once his bat started to cool off, and Cameron will now head back to North American baseball for an opportunity with the Blue Jays.

A veteran of five MLB seasons, Cameron has hit .200/.258/.326 over 472 plate appearances and 160 career games with the Tigers, A’s, and Brewers from 2020-25.  Once a highly touted prospect in the Astros’ farm system, Cameron was one of the key pieces of the trade package sent to Detroit for Justin Verlander in August 2017, but Cameron has yet to deliver on any of that early-career promise.  He spent much of last season in Milwaukee’s organization, including 21 games and 42 PA in the majors that yielded a .195/.214/.293 slash line.

Now in his age-29 season, Cameron has posted some big numbers at the Triple-A level over the last few years, on top of his performance in South Korea.  His base-stealing skill and his ability to play all three outfield positions adds to his usefulness as a depth player, though it remains to be seen if the Jays will give Cameron a look in the majors.

Injuries to Jesus Sanchez, Addison Barger, and Anthony Santander have thinned Toronto’s outfield ranks, though the Jays are more likely to turn to players on their 40-man roster (i.e. Yohendrick Pinango or Davis Schneider) to address any immediate needs in the outfield.  Cameron is also out of minor league options, limiting his roster flexibility.
