Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has undergone an offseason procedure.
Earlier this week, the Toronto Blue Jays’ first baseman underwent laser vision correction surgery. Guerrero had his procedure completed at the Laser Eye Center of Miami, according to their Instagram page.
The 2026 campaign was Guerrero’s worst since becoming a major-leaguer in April 2019. Guerrero appeared in 144 games and batted .260 with nine home runs and 57 RBIs, in what was a disappointing season from almost start to finish.
Coming off a postseason run in which Guerrero batted .397 with eight home runs and 15 RBIs, the expectations were sky-high for the 27-year-old, as the Blue Jays were projected by many to be a threat in the American League after their World Series appearance.
The results were the complete opposite. The Blue Jays finished last in the AL East with a 79-83 record and Guerrero struggled to replicate the success he displayed over much of his career.
In shocking fashion, Guerrero almost went the entire season without hitting a home run at Rogers Centre. It took until September 13, the Blue Jays’ 75th home game of the year for Guerrero to see a ball sail over the fence. Guerrero hit the home run off Trevor Rogers in the fifth inning during an 8-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
For the first time in his career, Guerrero spent time on the injured list after suffering a concussion on August 14, which resulted in him being placed on the 7-day IL a day later. Guerrero suffered the injury after New York Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr. inadvertently kneed him in the head after a collision at third base. Guerrero missed the minimum seven days before returning to the Blue Jays’ lineup on August 22.
Not only was the year a struggle on the field, but Guerrero made headlines for comments he made in an interview with Veronica Batista of Noticias Telemicro. During the interview, Guerrero touched on his contract and the reception from fans, which a few days later resulted in an apology prior to a game against the Cincinnati Reds.
“It’s been a disappointing year for me. I couldn’t help my team more to accomplish our goal, and it’s just hard for me,” Guerrero said, adding, “the main reason I’m here is to apologize to everyone for my comments, and knowing that I’m very disappointed about my year.”
While 2026 didn’t go how anyone surrounding the Blue Jays could have hoped or imagined for Guerrero, he remains under team control for the next 13 seasons, and will be tasked with leading Toronto back to the playoffs in 2027.
