Bo Bichette Clarifies Mindset Behind Mets Contract & Opt-Out Decision

The New York Mets expected Bo Bichette to help anchor their lineup when they handed him a massive three-year, $126M contract this offseason. Instead, the early months of 2026 have turned into a frustrating grind for both sides. He’s struggled badly at the plate, and the pressure around Queens is only getting louder as the Mets continue sliding in the standings.

For Bichette, the adjustment has been tougher than expected. Through 46 games, the former Blue Jays star is hitting just .210 with a .531 OPS. The expectations that came with the contract and a fresh start in New York have become a heavy spotlight.

Speaking with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Bichette opened up about both his struggles and the opt-outs in his contract. While admitting the transition to New York has been difficult, he also alluded that he still views the deal as a long-term commitment rather than a short stop.

“There are a lot of things I didn’t anticipate. Just dealing with everything. New teammates. New organization. Staff. New fan base. Everything, I think,” Bichette. “Being on a new team, I just want to help the team, first off. But I think, naturally, I want to impress people and show people what I can do. Not being able to do that is tough.”

The talent has never been the question with Bichette. Now the Mets need their star infielder to settle in fast enough to keep their season from slipping away.

Bo Bichette’s Brutal Mets Start Comes With One Catch

If we were to make an opinion, Bichette has been one of the biggest disappointments in baseball so far. However, the numbers also show he’s been getting crushed by bad luck.

Bichette owns one of MLB’s biggest gaps between expected stats and actual production. He’s also had more “Good Fielding Plays” made against him than any hitter in baseball this season.

That doesn’t completely excuse the struggles, though. The Mets still need more from their $126M star, especially with the offense falling apart around him. However, if the bad luck finally swings back the other way, Bo Bichette could still heat up fast and change the tone around his season.
