Bo Bichette Gets Candid Ahead of Potential Final Games With Blue Jays

With free agency around the corner, Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette is well aware that his days playing alongside All-Star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. might be numbered — though that won’t stop Bichette from going down without a fight.

Not only did the Blue Jays win their first AL East title since 2015, but they also secured the American League’s No. 1 playoff seed. Both their ALDS opponent and Bichette’s availability for Saturday’s opener remain undetermined, though, as the two-time All-Star recovers from a knee sprain.

This year marks the fourth playoff appearance since the Bichette and Guerrero partnership began in 2019. One problem: Toronto is winless in those six postseason games.

“We’ve always had huge goals together,” Bichette told The Athletic. “To win as much as we can, win the World Series, if not more. So I think that it’s been a road.

“You kind of find a recipe that might work, and we [have] to continue to grow that,” Bichette continued. “Hopefully that’s for many more years, but it feels good to have another opportunity.”

This may be the final opportunity, and Bichette knows it. Although Guerrero signed a 14-year extension in April the 27-year-old Bichette is only weeks away from hitting free agency — and he’ll have no shortage of suitors, especially after an impressive bounceback campaign featuring 18 home runs, 94 RBIs, and an .840 OPS, his highest in a full season.

It’s refreshing to hear Bichette openly imply and acknowledge that there’s a chance he won’t be back in Toronto next season. Rather than opt for a PR-friendly answer of how he’s focused on “one game at a time” or the typical cliché, Bichette said what we’re all thinking.

Whether or not we’ll see Bichette wear a Blue Jays uniform again, though, remains unclear even before the offseason begins. Toronto manager John Schneider didn’t commit to Bichette being ready to face either the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees in the ALCS.

“I’ll never put anything past Bo, in terms of people saying he can’t do something and him proving them wrong,” Schneider told reporters on Wednesday.

Major League Baseball has not announced a start time for Toronto’s ALDS opener. However, the league confirmed that Game 2 in Toronto will begin shortly after 4 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
