Bo Bichette envisioned helping return the New York Mets to championship contention when he signed a three-year, $126 million contract in January. But his first year in Queens has not gone according to plan as the Mets have struggled to meet expectations.

In recent games, Bichette has shown flashes of the hitter who was one of the American League’s best shortstops in his final season with the Toronto Blue Jays. However, the Mets as a group have failed to step up and the club finds itself last in the National League East.

The Mets’ season reached another low point Thursday when they suffered their sixth consecutive loss, prompting the club to dismiss manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday.

Andy Green was immediately named interim manager as New York, now 34-47, prepares to open a weekend home series against the Philadelphia Phillies in an attempt to stop its slide.

Despite the club’s position in the standings, Bichette opened up about the team’s chances and believes there is still time to turn the season around.

“There definitely is, but we’ve got to play really good baseball,” the two-time All-Star said ahead of Friday’s game.

Bichette is batting .254 with 83 hits, 10 home runs, 45 RBIs and 42 runs scored in 81 games this season.

After a sluggish start that left him well below his career standards through the first two months, Bichette is batting .344 with five home runs, 17 RBIs and a .965 OPS in June.

Although Bichette has expressed his confidence in the team, his future in New York remains uncertain. His three-year contract includes player opt-outs after both the 2026 and 2027 seasons, giving him the flexibility to test free agency if he chooses.

With the Mets now under new leadership and facing an uphill battle to get back into the National League playoff race, the final half of the season could play a significant role in determining whether Bichette’s tenure in Queens extends beyond his first year.
