The Boston Red Sox took two of three games from the Arizona Diamondbacks at Fenway Park, providing a welcome boost after a recent stretch of uneven play.
Arizona has performed well in the National League in recent weeks, making the series victory a meaningful result for a Red Sox club looking to regain momentum.
Boston now prepares for a three-game set against the San Francisco Giants, another opportunity to build on recent success.
The Giants rank among the weaker teams in the majors this season, though that does not guarantee easy wins on the field.
San Francisco still features talented players, including former Red Sox standout Rafael Devers, who returns to Fenway for the series.
Ahead of Friday’s series opener, the Red Sox released their lineup, placing outfielder Jarren Duran in the seventh spot.
The full batting order lists Nick Sogard at second base, Ceddanne Rafaela in center field, Wilyer Abreu in right field, Willson Contreras at first base, Adley Rutschman at catcher, Caleb Durbin at third base, Duran in left field, Andruw Monasterio at shortstop and Mickey Gasper as the designated hitter. Sonny Gray is scheduled to start on the mound.
Duran had batted eighth in the previous contest against Arizona after spending much of the season in the seventh position. The outfielder has drawn significant attention this year because of persistent struggles at the plate.
He enters the series hitting .206 with 17 home runs and 62 RBIs, along with an OPS of .622. The Red Sox have managed to stay competitive despite Duran’s difficulties, yet the club will need improved production from him to maximize its potential.
Duran has explored various approaches in an effort to escape the prolonged slump, with limited success so far. Some observers have linked the downturn to his participation in the World Baseball Classic before the season, though no definitive connection has been established.
Several other players who competed in the tournament have also experienced reduced production this year, lending some support to that theory.
At the same time, Duran remains a skilled athlete whose talent suggests he will eventually find a way out of the current funk.
Should the struggles continue, the Red Sox may face important choices regarding his future once the regular season concludes. Trade discussions involving Duran have surfaced in recent years, including around the most recent deadline, with various clubs expressing interest.
He has two remaining years of arbitration eligibility, presenting Boston with a complex evaluation. The organization could opt to move him now at a reduced value or retain him in hopes of a return to earlier form.
For the immediate future, attention stays on helping Duran regain his stroke and supporting the team’s push toward another deep postseason run.
Significant organizational shifts could still arrive after the final out of the year.
