The Boston Red Sox will look to add to their roster after returning to the playoffs last season, ultimately losing to the Yankees in three games in the Wild Card Series. They have already made their first big trade of the offseason, acquiring Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals, and will now turn their attention to adding more bats.

Red Sox Interested In JT Realmuto

The Boston Red Sox are among teams showing interest in former Phillies catcher JT The Boston Red Sox are among the teams showing interest in former Phillies catcher JT Realmuto, per Ken Rosenthal.

“Acquiring another catcher is not among the Sox’s top priorities, or so it has seemed. But the Red Sox are showing interest in J.T. Realmuto, according to people briefed on their discussions.”https://x.com/tylermilliken_/status/1993311647558254812/photo/1

Realmuto will easily be the best catcher on the open market, with many teams in hot pursuit. Carlos Narvaez was solid in his first season with the Red Sox, flashing the leather behind a plate, making a ton of jaw-dropping plays. The bat was hot and cold, but he put together a solid year and showed why he can be the long-term catcher in Boston for the foreseeable future.

Adding Realmuto doesn’t make a lot of sense for the Red Sox, and allocating money to add another catcher to their roster when they clearly have other glaring needs to put first this offseason. The most likely scenario is that Realmuto reunites with the Philadelphia Phillies on a multi-year deal and remains the everyday catcher.

What Is the Red Sox’s Next Move?

After adding Sonny Gray, I still expect the Red Sox to add to their pitching staff while focusing on bolstering their lineup. Retaining Alex Bregman will be a top priority, as will adding another outfielder and addressing the right side of the infield.

Looking to capitalize on the open window they have with a lot of young, upcoming talent, adding proven veteran talent is a requirement if they want to have a chance to compete in the American League East next season. The Blue Jays are off to a hot start, signing Dylan Cease to a seven-year contract, and are expected to add more talent and keep their foot on the gas.

The Yankees have been relatively quiet thus far, but with the Winter Meetings starting in just over a week, the market will move quickly, and once the dominoes in the outfield start to fall, their offseason officially begins. The Red Sox need to hit on the margins and make key moves to bring their team to the next level and be viewed as real contenders for the World Series in 2026.
