The Boston Red Sox start a series tonight in San Diego against the Padres. This afternoon, they claimed catcher Ali Sánchez off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays designated Sánchez for assignment on Tuesday. The Red Sox 40-man roster is now at 40. This season, Sánchez appeared in only eight games for the Blue Jays, hitting .238 with a .571 OPS. He had two doubles and two runs scored. He also played in 54 games at Triple-A Buffalo, hitting .279 with a .766 OPS. Sánchez had seven doubles, six home runs, 28 RBI, 24 runs scored, and 18 walks. The move gives the Red Sox a little bit of catching depth for the remainder of the season.
