Boston Red Sox' Closer, Primary Trade Target Dealing with Concerning New Injury
USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox got some concerning injury news on Wednesday as pitchers and catchers undertook their first workout in Fort Myers: Closer Kenley Jansen is dealing with "lat soreness" and won't throw for a week.

Per Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald:

Kenley Jansen had a normal offseason but reported to camp with “general lat soreness,” Craig Breslow announces.

"Kenley says he expects to begin throwing in a week or so," she added.

Jansen seemed to downplay the issue, and maybe he's right to do that, but any time you have a veteran (36 years old) who reports to camp with an injury, it's fair to raise eyebrows.

Furthermore, one way or the other, Jansen is a critical part of what the Red Sox do in 2024. If he's on the roster, he's the anchor of the bullpen. He could also be traded, and his name has appeared in several reports and rumors over the last few weeks. If the Sox trade him, they would be hoping for a good haul in return, and you can't easily trade a guy who has injury concerns.

Jansen is a 14-year veteran who has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and Red Sox. He spent 12 years in LA, helping them win the 2020 World Series, before spending 2022 in Atlanta and 2023 in Boston.

He's a member of the 400-save club and owns a 2.52 lifetime ERA. He's 45-34 for his career.

If Jansen were to miss any time - or get dealt - John Schreiber and Chris Martin could be in line for save chances.
