The Boston Red Sox upgraded several positions during the offseason, and they now look like a premier contender in the American League. One position they did not focus on much and do not look to be very strong in is the catcher position.
The Red Sox will go into 2025 with Connor Wong as the primary starter and Carlos Narvaez and Blake Sabol competing for the backup spot during Spring Training, Narvaez has just 13 career at-bats, while Sabol had just 32 at-bats in 2024.
Wong had a career year in 2024, hitting .280 with a career-high 13 home runs and a career-high OPS of .758. With the lack of talent at the backup catcher position, Wong will certainly get the majority of playing time.
The backup battle between Sabol and Narvaez during the spring will be interesting to watch. In his rookie season with the San Francisco Giants in 2023, Sabol showed flashes of potential, as he hit 13 home runs and drove in 44 runs. In limited action in 2024, he had a .313 average and a .796 OPS.
Narvaez appeared in six games for the Yankees in 2024 and hit .231 with no home runs. It feels like it will be an uphill battle for Narvaez to beat out Sabol for the backup catching role.
With no top-tier catching prospects in the minor leagues, Boston will have to rely on its major leaguers to carry the load at that position and hope they can stay healthy as well.
