The Boston Red Sox will face the Minnesota Twins tonight in Grapefruit League play. The Red Sox enter tonight 11-12 in the Grapefruit League while the Twins are 8-15. Ahead of tonight’s game, the Red Sox trimmed down their roster at Fort Myers. They optioned seven players to minor league camp. First baseman Tsung-Che Cheng and infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard are optioned to minor league camp. Infielder/outfielders Max Ferguson and Tyler McDonough, infielder Mikey Romero, outfielder Allan Castro, and first baseman/catcher Nathan Hickey were all reassigned to minor league camp.

Cheng this spring in nine games hit .077 with a .445 OPS. He had an RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base. In three career big league games, he’s yet to record a hit. He also appeared in four games for Chinese Taipei in the World Baseball Classic, hitting .333 with a 1.238 OPS. He had a home run, two RBI, four runs scored, and four stolen bases.
Sogard, this spring in 18 games, has hit .081 with a .348 OPS. He has a home run, four RBI, four runs scored, and two stolen bases. In 30 games last season, he hit .260 with a .661 OPS. He had eight doubles, nine RBI, 13 runs scored, and two stolen bases.
Ferguson, in 16 games, hit .208 with a .713 OPS. He had two doubles, a home run, seven RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. He spent time last season at Double-A and Triple-A. In 118 games, he hit .205 with a .637 OPS. He had 13 doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 42 RBI, 52 runs scored, and 34 stolen bases.
McDonough, in 18 games, hit .280 with a .819 OPS. He had a home run, two RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Last season in 79 games at Worcester, he hit .254 with a .697 OPS. He had 12 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 27 RBI, 32 runs scored, and six stolen bases.
Romero, this spring in 13 games, hit .273 with a .591 OPS. He had a double, four RBI, and four runs scored. In 111 games between Double-A and Triple he hit .245 with a .751 OPS. He had 33 doubles, four triples, 17 home runs, 76 RBI, 61 runs scored, and five stolen bases. Romero is the Red Sox 13th ranked prospect.
Castro, in 19 games this spring, hit .294 with a .793 OPS. He had two doubles, a home run, seven RBI, seven runs scored, and three stolen bases. In 92 games at Double-A, he hit .268 with a .753 OPS. He had 20 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 37 RBI, 43 runs scored, and 15 stolen bases. Castro is the Red Sox 25th ranked prospect.
Hickey in 15 games this spring, his .160 with a .676 OPS. He had two home runs, five RBI, and four runs scored. In 128 games at Worcester last season, he hit .234 with a .733 OPS. He had 23 doubles, two triples, 17 home runs, 75 RBI, 45 runs scored, and two stolen bases.
