The Boston Red Sox have selected LSU right-handed pitcher Anthony Eyanson with the No. 87 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. Eyanson transferred to LSU last offseason after spending two years at UC San Diego.

In his lone season at LSU, Eyanson made 20 appearances and 18 starts, logging 108.0 total innings on the mound. Eyanson finished this past season with 152 strikeouts compared to just 36 walks, and a 12-2 record.

Eyanson was pivotal to LSU’s run to its second national title in the past three years. Eyanson pitched 6.1 innings in LSU’s Game 1 win over Coastal Carolina in the College World Series Final. In the victory, Eyanson tallied nine strikeouts and threw 99 total pitches.

For his efforts in the 2025 campaign, Eyanson was named an All-SEC Second-Team starting pitcher. In his two years at UC San Diego, Eyanson amassed 111.0 innings pitched and posted a 3.07 ERA in his sophomore season.

After registering 85 strikeouts in 2024, Eyanson was named an All-Big West Second-Team selection. Anthony Eyanson played high school baseball at Lakewood (CA). He was the No. 180 overall prospect and No. 52 right-handed pitcher from California in the 2022 recruiting cycle, according to Perfect Game.

While Eyanson’s game isn’t perfect, scout believe he could carve out a role at the next level. Ahead of the draft, MLB.com provided an in-depthy analysis of Eyanson’s talents.

“Eyanson’s slider has become his best pitch during his first season in Baton Rouge, parking at 82-85 mph and eliciting empty swings in and out of the strike zone thanks to its tremendous depth,” the analysis read. “His upper-70s curveball has been solid but hasn’t enticed hitters to chase nearly as much as his slide piece has. His fastball has operated at 92-94 mph and topped out at 98, though its lack of life can make it vulnerable if he doesn’t locate it well.

“Though Eyanson’s low-80s changeup can miss bats with its fade and sink, he struggles to throw it for strikes. He’s a good athlete with decent control but will nibble around the plate too much at times. He has a ceiling of a No. 3 starter if he can improve his fastball shape but also could wind up as a reliever who relies heavily on his breaking pitches.”

The MLB Draft is July 13-14 in Atlanta during All-Star week. July 13 is the first three rounds, July 14 is rounds 4-20. Day 1 coverage is MLB Network/ESPN starting at 6pm ET. Day 2 coverage is via MLB.com starting at 11:30am ET.
