As it currently stands, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is entering the final season of the three-year contract extension he signed in 2022.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman was vocal in his support of Roberts’ continued future with the club throughout the 2024 season.

Now that Roberts is a two-time World Series champion manager, a new contract extension with the Dodgers is a foregone conclusion. The Dodgers began contract negotiations early in the offseason, but at the time general manager Brandon Gomes explained the organization was first focusing on constructing the roster.

That item can certainly be crossed off the to-do list as the Dodgers have since agreed to deals with Teoscar Hernández, Hyeseong Kim, Roki Sasaki, Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates, among others.

“We’ve been in contact with Dave, and we always keep those conversations. So when we have something to announce, we’ll certainly let you guys know,” Gomes said when asked if there had been progress in talks with Roberts.

Roberts signed the aforementioned three-year contract extension two weeks before the start of the regular season in 2022, so these most recent negotiations are well within the norm.

With an annual salary of $3.25 million, Roberts was the 11th-highest paid manager in MLB last season. Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell led all managers with an annual salary of $8 million. The five-year, $40 million contract Counsell signed with the Cubs prior to the 2024 season was the most lucrative managerial contract in MLB history.

As one of the most winningest managers in MLB history with two World Series championships, Roberts should unquestionably be set up to dethrone Counsell as the highest paid manager in baseball history.

Dave Roberts humbled to be part of Dodgers history

With the latest victory over the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series, Roberts joined Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda as the only managers in Dodgers franchise history to lead the team to multiple World Series titles.

“Humbling. Never thought I would be in that same conversation,” Roberts recently said of the achievement.

“I’m a part of a great organization, a lot of great people around me supporting me, and we’ve won a lot of ballgames. This is something I really wanted. I wanted this one.

“There were some guys that were here with me in ’20, and you hear some naysayers, and so we didn’t get the parade that I’ve been talking about the last week. I’m proud of a lot of guys. The list goes on for the players that put me in this position.”
