The Atlanta Braves have no choice but to sell at the trade deadline, but according to pretty much every MLB insider, they aren’t going the full-blown fire sale route.
Alex Anthopoulos still believes in this core group. The goal in 2026 and beyond is to re-tool and compete immediately, so unless somebody blows him away with an offer, this could actually be a relatively quiet trade deadline for the Braves, with only a few guys on expiring contracts set to leave the organization.
The most talked about names to this point are Marcell Ozuna, Raisel Iglesias, Aaron Bummer, and Pierce Johnson. Some of them will be more easily moved than others, but if the Braves can come away with a few future contributors from some desperate clubs for their scraps, it will be a successful trade deadline for Alex Anthopoulos and company.
The Mariners have a dominant closer in Andrés Muñoz, but the overall unit has struggled as they make a push in the AL West race. Raisel Iglesias would be a perfect fit out in Seattle for a couple of reasons. He wouldn’t be asked to close games, which has been a problem for him this year, and he’d be moving to a very pitcher friendly ballpark. It’s not easy to hit home runs in Seattle, and that’s been Iglesias’ kryptonite this season. He makes a lot of sense for the Mariners.
We are currently amid a good ole’ fashion source off between a trio of MLB insiders. On Tuesday, Hector Gomez reported talks were intensifying between the Braves and Padres around Marcell Ozuna for a pair of top 30 prospects. However, both Mark Bowman and Robert Murray denied hearing anything of that nature.
I’m going to side with Gomez here, who has a history of breaking news when it comes to players in Latin America, and has given us a slew of nuggets around Marcell Ozuna in the past. The Padres also just make a lot of sense as a destination as they look to boost their offense for a postseason run.
Bummer’s performance this month might make him difficult to trade. However, there are just too many teams that need relief help, and there will always be a market for lefty relievers this time of year. The Braves would probably give him away to any team willing to eat his $9.5 million salary for next season. I’m not sure there will be a club that is willing to do that, but if the Braves decide to eat some salary in return this year, so they can have a clean sheet next year, they should have no problem finding Aaron Bummer a new home ahead of the trade deadline.
I tend to agree that it’s highly unlikely the Braves deal any of their core pieces because, in most cases, they would be selling way too low. They are better off just letting the second half play out and hoping guys like Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies, and Michael Harris II can find some better form down the stretch. Sean Murphy is the most interesting name the Braves could potentially move. He’d have no shortage of suitors if made available, but all reports suggest Alex Anthopoulos will not trade Murphy before the deadline.
As far as Pierce Johnson, perhaps the Braves get blown away with an offer. But because he has a team option for $7 million next season, I don’t see the Braves wanting to move him. Their bullpen going into next year already needs a lot of work if their goal is to compete, and trading away Pierce Johnson would just create another potentially expensive hole they would have to fill in the offseason.
