As of now, there are six current vacant manager spots, with two more potentially opening up depending on what the Nationals and Rockies decide to do with their interim managers.
Of all the managerial openings, the Braves job is unequivocally the most attractive. They boast a roster loaded with talent, one of the most respected general managers in the sport, and have consistently carried a top-10 payroll. Whoever takes over won’t be asked to endure a multi-year rebuild — the expectation will be to win right away.
That alone should give Atlanta a leg up in the hiring process. Unsurprisingly, the same names continue to surface — Walt Weiss, David Ross, Mark DeRosa, and Ron Washington. That’s no coincidence. The Braves have a history of preferring candidates who already know the organization, and all four of those men have ties to Atlanta as either players or coaches.
Still, if the Braves were to go outside the box, the options are plentiful. Braves Broadcaster — and one of the sharpest analysts in the game — C.J. Nitkowski recently put together a list of 28 potential candidates. Twenty-one have prior managerial experience, while seven would represent fresh faces in the role.
We are at 6 official managerial openings with two more teams who finished with interims undecided. The postseason could give us 1-2 more.
Here's a list of recent managers who could be candidates along with some of the new names on the scene.

There are several intriguing names on Nitkowski’s list who could be considered candidates for the Braves.
Bruce Bochy and his four World Series rings are enticing, but he appears destined for a reunion in San Francisco, where he won three titles alongside current Giants general manager Buster Posey.
Joe Maddon brings championship pedigree as well, having guided the Cubs to their historic 2016 World Series win. That team also featured David Ross, who later replaced Maddon in Chicago. Ross never really got a fair shake in his first stint as a manager and was ultimately replaced by Craig Counsell, who signed a record-breaking $40 million deal to leave Milwaukee. Now eager for another opportunity, Ross’s ties to Atlanta — where he spent four seasons as a player — make him an interesting fit.
Ron Washington remains a fan favorite, but at 73 and coming off major health concerns, it feels unlikely he’ll be handed the job. Skip Schumaker is another intriguing option, though most expect him to take over in Texas, where he’s been serving as a special advisor.
Then there’s Walt Weiss, who has been Atlanta’s bench coach for the last eight seasons. While he might not be the sexy hire, the Braves value continuity, and keeping their highly regarded coaching staff intact could outweigh the desire for a more exciting splash.
As for candidates without MLB managerial experience, two names stand out: Mark DeRosa and Yadier Molina. DeRosa, a product of the Braves organization, has managed Team USA since 2023 and continues to garner respect around the game. Molina, meanwhile, spent his entire career with the Cardinals and is widely regarded as one of the smartest players to ever play the game. He could be in line to take over in St. Louis eventually, but with the role currently occupied, perhaps the Braves would have interest.
