Braves Announce Replacement After Unfortunate News
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Braves announced multiple roster moves before Sunday's series finale, placing right-hander Reynaldo López on the 15-day injured list and recalling JR Ritchie from Triple-A Gwinnett.

The move comes after López exited his July 29 start against the Milwaukee Brewers with left knee inflammation. Atlanta backdated the IL stint to July 30, allowing Ritchie to immediately join the rotation as the National League East leaders continue navigating injuries.

López has worked as both a starter and reliever this season, posting a 4-3 record with a 3.64 ERA and 66 strikeouts across 71.2 innings in 24 appearances. His absence removes another experienced arm from a pitching staff already managing several health concerns.

Atlanta enters Sunday atop the NL East at 66-45, holding an eight-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. Despite that cushion, the Braves continue to shuffle their rotation ahead of the Monday trade deadline.

Ritchie rejoins the major league club for his eighth start of the season after appearing in 13 games for Atlanta. The right-hander owns a 4.50 ERA with 49 strikeouts over 54 innings while continuing his progression after missing much of 2024 recovering from Tommy John surgery.

López's injury adds another layer of uncertainty to Atlanta's pitching plans, particularly with the trade deadline approaching. The Braves recently added Bailey Falter, but losing one of their more dependable veterans could still prompt additional moves.

Atlanta will now look for Ritchie to provide stability while López recovers. With October aspirations still firmly intact, every rotation decision carries added significance as the Braves prepare for the stretch run.
