The Atlanta Braves are still awaiting the return of catcher Sean Murphy, who has not played since September of last year while recovering from a right hip labral tear.
The 31-year-old spent the offseason rehabbing, but it was well known he would not be available for Opening Day, and he has missed Atlanta’s first 13 games of the regular season.
When he eventually returns, Murphy will be looking to regain the form he showed earlier in his Braves tenure.
Over the past two seasons, his batting average has dipped below .200 as he has struggled to make consistent contact, a sharp contrast from the player he was in 2023 when he earned his first All-Star selection.
Fortunately for Atlanta, Murphy’s recovery had been progressing well, and he was officially set to begin a rehab assignment on Friday with the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers. However, hours before first pitch, the Stripers announced an update from the Braves.
Murphy would not begin his assignment as planned because he needed to attend to a personal matter. “The start of Sean Murphy’s rehabilitation assignment has been delayed to a family matter,” the Braves wrote.
Speaking with reporters pregame, Braves manager Walt Weiss provided a timeline for Murphy’s brief absence, saying he will not return over the weekend but will rejoin the rehab assignment shortly after. It is unclear what the family matter involves, but the good news for Atlanta is that the delay is expected to last only a few days.

When Murphy does return, his role will look different than it did a year ago. Drake Baldwin has emerged as one of the Braves most important young players, winning National League Rookie of the Year last season and establishing himself as the catcher of the future.
Murphy will likely split time behind the plate with Baldwin and could see more opportunities at designated hitter. That shift may benefit him, especially given his injury history, as it could give him the best chance to stay healthy and productive.
For a Braves team trying to stabilize its lineup early in the season, Murphy’s eventual return still carries real value, even if his responsibilities evolve.
