Braves are calling up old friend Jesse Chavez again

I’m not sure Jesse Chavez is the answer to the Braves’ problems in the bullpen. He posted an 8.31 ERA over 8.2 innings of work during Spring Training with the Rangers before he was released, but when has that stopped him from performing for the Braves in the past?

Chavez has essentially been a tomato can with every other team yet elite with the Braves. He has more WAR in his five seasons in Atlanta than he does with every other team combined over the other 12 seasons he’s played at the major-league level. Eventually, it feels like this run will come to a screeching halt, but given the Braves current situation in the bullpen, they could do a lot worse than going back to the well that’s been so fruitful for them over the last several seasons, hoping Jesse Chavez has one last run of magic in him at 41-years-old.

In a corresponding move, the Braves have designated Hector Neris for assignment. Neris was a late addition to the Spring Training roster as a non-roster invite to camp, but the Braves opted to roll with the veteran after throwing in just three exhibition games. He appeared in two games against the Padres, giving up five earned runs and recording just three outs. At 35-years-old, the Braves wasted no time pulling the plug.
