Braves Lose Another Pitching Option for MLB Playoffs

The Atlanta Braves have lost another pitching option with the postseason approaching. Right-hander Reynaldo López is headed to the 15-day injured list with right shoulder discomfort.

Mark Bowman of MLB.com reported the move on X after López struggled in Monday’s 7-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

López allowed five earned runs on six hits over three innings in the loss. His fastball reached 94.6 mph, and the Braves decided to place him on the injured list after the shoulder issue resurfaced.

The discomfort has reportedly appeared at different points throughout the season. That makes the situation more significant for a pitcher who missed nearly all of 2025 after undergoing major shoulder surgery.

López was trying to put together a healthier season after making just one start in 2025. He has posted a 4-5 record with a 4.54 ERA and 1.412 WHIP over 26 appearances this year, including 13 starts.

The Braves are already dealing with several pitching injuries. Spencer Strider remains shut down, while Spencer Schwellenbach is set to undergo elbow surgery after suffering another setback.

Atlanta has also dealt with injuries involving young arms such as AJ Smith-Shawver and Hurston Waldrep. López’s absence adds another challenge as the Braves prepare for the postseason.

Atlanta still holds a strong position in the National League. The Braves entered Tuesday with an 88-63 record and a magic number of four to clinch a playoff spot.

Chris Sale could become even more important down the stretch, while younger pitchers such as JR Ritchie and Owen Murphy may have to take on additional work.

With the playoffs getting closer, Atlanta will now have to manage its remaining pitching options carefully.
