Tuesday was another incredibly busy day for the Braves, and there was also a baseball game that was played. Not that anybody wants to remember that, as Atlanta lost their sixth straight game to open the season by a score of 3-1.
Outside of the game, the Braves provided a couple of injury updates on a few critical pieces. The news on Reynaldo Lopez was not good. He will have an arthroscopic procedure on his injured shoulder to see if anything more than just rest is needed. The Braves are hopeful he will be able to return this season, but at the very least, it can be expected that he will miss several months, and that’s if things go well.
If they go poorly, Reynaldo Lopez could miss the rest of the season, and there should be concerns about whether he’ll ever positively contribute to the Braves again, which is very bad news considering he just signed a three-year, $30 million extension with the club a few months ago.
Sean Murphy‘s prognosis is much more positive. The Braves catcher began his rehab assignment and homered, with MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reporting that once Murphy catches back-to-back games, he will rejoin the team in Atlanta, which could happen as soon as this weekend.
Sean Murphy went 1-for-4 with a homer for Gwinnett today. Once he plays back-to-back days, he’ll likely be activated. Could be this weekend. Baldwin would likely stay up to share the catching duties. But that’s not official yet.

On top of it all, the Braves swung yet another trade with the Angels, acquiring some pitching depth in the process for cash considerations.
The #Braves today acquired RHP Michael Petersen from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.

The Braves were already in scramble mode before the season started when it came to their pitching staff, and things have only become exponentially more pressing with Reynaldo Lopez’s injury.
Michael Petersen isn’t much to write home about. He made his MLB debut last year and threw 19.2 combined innings between the Marlins and Dodgers, recording a 5.95 ERA. Maybe we see him in Atlanta at some point; maybe we don’t, but expect a lot more small transactions like this all season, as the Braves aim to find more trustworthy arms.
