The Atlanta Braves added a key arm for Wednesday's split-admission doubleheader against the New York Mets, reinstating right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver from the injured list and naming him the club's 27th man for the twin bill. The 23-year-old is set to start Game 1 at Citi Field after completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Smith-Shawver's return marks his first major league appearance since May 29, 2025, when he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Atlanta did not need to make a corresponding roster move because MLB rules allow an extra player for scheduled doubleheaders.

Before rejoining the Braves, Smith-Shawver made five rehab appearances across the minor leagues, throwing 17.2 innings as the organization built him back up for a return to the rotation.

The timing provides Atlanta with another starting option as it continues to lead the National League East. Smith-Shawver will oppose veteran left-hander Sean Manaea in the opener before the Braves turn to the remainder of their staff for Game 2.

Atlanta enters the day atop the division with a 62-44 record, holding a 6-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. Meanwhile, the Mets sit last in the NL East at 45-62 as they continue playing out the final months of the season.

Smith-Shawver has appeared in 16 major league games over parts of the 2023, 2024 and 2025 seasons, making 15 starts while posting a 3-2 record with a 3.86 ERA. His successful rehab assignment gave the Braves confidence he was ready to return after more than a year away from big league action.

Wednesday's start represents an important milestone for one of Atlanta's top young pitchers. If he can stay healthy, Smith-Shawver could provide valuable depth for the Braves' rotation as they push toward another postseason berth.
