Braves' Marcell Ozuna agrees to diversion program that could lead to dismissal of domestic violence case

Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna has agreed to enter a diversion program that could lead to his domestic violence case being dismissed, according to ESPN

Ozuna was arrested more than three months ago for allegedly assaulting his wife. Police officers in Atlanta said they witnessed the outfielder attacking his wife while responding to a 911 call. He faces misdemeanor charges of family violence battery and simple assault.

According to Fulton County deputy district attorney Simone Hylton, the charges could be dropped if Ozuna meets the diversion program's conditions within six months.

The 30-year-old was placed on supervision for six months and must participate in a 24-week family violence intervention program that includes an anger management course and a psychological assessment, Hylton said. He also has to complete 200 hours of community service, refrain from illegal drug use and avoid contact with his wife.

Ozuna could still face a suspension from Major League Baseball even if he completes the diversion program. The league is reviewing his case under the domestic violence policy between the MLB and MLB Players Association.

The two-time All-Star signed a four-year, $65 million deal with the Braves after a solid first season with the franchise in 2020. In 48 games this season, he's hitting .213/.288/.356 with seven home runs and 26 RBI.

Ozuna has not played since his fingers got injured in a game against the Boston Red Sox on May 25, four days before he was arrested.

Despite the absence of Ozuna and Ronald Acuna Jr., who tore his ACL, the Braves are first in the National League East with a 73-65 record, 2.5 games ahead of the second-place Philadelphia Phillies.
