The Atlanta Braves are looking to keep an infielder after they designated him for assignment. They announced Wednesday afternoon that Brett Wisely has been outrighted to Triple-A. Whether or not he accepted his assignment is to be determined.
Wisely was removed from the 40-man roster back on March 25 as the team prepared its roster for opening day. Once they opted to bring Dominic Smith and Kyle Farmer onto the active roster, he was the odd man out.
Wisely initially joined the Braves toward the end of last season when he was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. Once Ozzie Albies went down with a season-ending wrist injury as the season wound down, he was able to step in.
Back in January, he was DFA'd and claimed by the Tampa Bay Rays. However, he was scooped back up by the Braves just before players began to report for spring training.
Wisely went hitless in four games with Atlanta last season, but he had himself a solid spring. In 16 games, he batted. 324 with a .929 OPS, five extra-base hits and a pair of RBIs. He'll either provide depth in the system for the Braves or another team if he elects free agency and gets picked up by another team.
To begin the season, the starting infield consists of Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, Mauricio Dubón and Austin Riley as expected. Ha-Seong Kim will become the starting shortstop once he returns from his rehab from surgery. He sustained a right middle finger injury back in January.
Smith, Farmer and Jorger Mateo round out the remaining infield depth, with Smith seeing the bulk of the platoon action. Smith has already had himself a big moment this season, hitting a walk-off grand slam back on Saturday. The Braves beat the Kansas City Royals, 6-2 in that game.
Much of the depth in Triple-A consists of players who were part of big league camp during spring training. Nacho Alvarez Jr., Jim Jarvis, Aaron Schunk, Luke Waddell and Luke Williams are all with Gwinnett. Veteran slugger Rowdy Tellez joined as a late addition on a minor league contract.
The Braves wrap up their series with the A's on Wednesday with an early afternoon game, before heading out west for a road trip to Arizona to face the Angels and Anaheim to face the Los Angeles Angels.
