The Atlanta Braves enter Saturday’s matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers looking to reverse a recent slide, and they are doing so with a notable adjustment at the top of their batting order.
After falling 2-1 to Milwaukee in their previous contest and dropping four of their last five games overall, manager Walt Weiss has shuffled the lineup in an effort to spark the offense.
Ronald Acuña Jr., who led off in the prior game against the Brewers, will bat second on Saturday. Catcher Drake Baldwin, who occupied the second spot previously, moves into the leadoff role.
The two players are essentially swapping places, a move that places Baldwin at the top of the order and slots the star right fielder directly behind him.
The full lineup features Baldwin leading off, followed by Acuña in right field, Matt Olson at first base, Michael Harris II in center, Ozzie Albies as the designated hitter, Mauricio Dubon at second, Mike Yastrzemski in left, Austin Riley at third, and Jim Jarvis at shortstop.
The change arrives at a moment when Acuña is searching for momentum. The five-time All-Star has gone hitless in each of his last two games and is mired in a stretch that has left him with a .234 batting average through 77 games this season.
He has still contributed 13 home runs and 35 RBI, yet those numbers fall short of the explosive production that defined his earlier peak years. A bounce-back performance against Milwaukee would provide a timely lift for a Braves club that has struggled to generate consistent offense during its recent skid.
Acuña’s presence remains a potential difference-maker regardless of his exact spot in the order. His combination of power, speed, and defensive range continues to make him one of the more dynamic players in the National League, even during a comparatively modest campaign by his standards.
Moving him one slot down allows Baldwin, who has shown the ability to get on base, to set the table, while Acuña can then drive in runs or create havoc on the bases with a runner already aboard.
Saturday’s contest offers Acuña an immediate opportunity to rediscover his form. The Braves need production from their most talented hitters if they hope to climb out of their current funk and regain traction in a competitive division race.
Whether the modest lineup tweak produces the desired results remains to be seen on the field, but it signals a willingness to experiment in search of answers.
For a team that has relied heavily on Acuña’s brilliance in the past, any adjustment that helps unlock his potential again could prove valuable as the season progresses.
