With the Braves activating Ronald Acuña Jr. from his rehab assignment, they’ve chosen to designate shortstop Orlando Arcia for assignment in a corresponding move.

The downward spiral for Orlando Arcia in Atlanta has been well-documented. After a shocking All-Star appearance in 2023, severe regression followed, which led to him eventually being benched in favor of Nick Allen this season.
Arcia didn’t really offer much off the bench. Once a strong-suit, he had fallen to a below average defensive player. Which, when paired with abysmal offense, isn’t ideal, especially given Arcia is one of the slowest players on the basepaths in the league. However, without him on the roster, it does leave the Braves with a bit of hole behind Nick Allen. There’s nobody else that has a wealth of experience playing shortstop, so another move is likely coming in the near future.
While Orlando Arcia had undoubtedly fallen out of favor with the fan base for a number of reasons, he really was a home run acquisition by Alex Anthopoulos. His first half in 2023 alone provided the Braves with a ton of surplus value, given he was only making a couple of million a year.
We’ll keep you updated with the Braves next move, as there is surely one coming in the not too distant future.
