Brewers Add Player After Sweeping Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers made a roster move Thursday after completing a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs, optioning Brandon Sproat to Triple-A Nashville and recalling right-hander Garrett Stallings.

The move comes after Sproat struggled in relief during Wednesday’s series finale. The rookie walked four of the five batters he faced in the ninth inning, leaving Milwaukee to bring in Abner Uribe to finish off an 8-6 victory.

The Brewers announced the transaction ahead of their upcoming series against the Cincinnati Reds. Hunter Baumgardt of Bally Sports Wisconsin first reported the move on X.

Sproat’s outing came after he had recently moved from the rotation to the bullpen. Manager Pat Murphy had previously been critical of the right-hander’s command, and his latest appearance added to those concerns.

Sproat has appeared in 22 games this season, including 19 starts. He is 3-7 with a 5.57 ERA, 101 strikeouts and 52 walks across 97 innings.

Stallings now returns to the Brewers’ bullpen after spending time in the minors. The 29-year-old has made four appearances for Milwaukee this season, pitching eight scoreless innings while allowing three hits and three walks with nine strikeouts.

The Brewers will hope Stallings can provide some stability to a bullpen that was tested during the final game against Chicago. Milwaukee still managed to finish the sweep and improve to 91-56 on the season.

The sweep also gave the Brewers a 10-game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central. Milwaukee now turns its attention to Cincinnati, with the Reds sitting at 69-77 entering the weekend series.

For Sproat, the assignment to Nashville provides another opportunity to work on his command away from the major league spotlight. The Brewers, meanwhile, will look to keep building their division lead with Stallings back in the bullpen.
