The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs on Saturday in Game 5 of the NLDS, advancing to the NLCS for the first time since 2018. The club continues its historic season against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy has consistently maximized his roster, frequently adjusting the lineup and setting up his pitching staff for favorable matchups. It took an all-hands-on-deck effort to get past the Cubs. However, one notable name was absent from the NLDS roster: Rhys Hoskins. The right-handed slugger missed significant time in the second half with a left thumb sprain but is now fully healthy.
Hoskins’ role with the team has diminished following the arrival of Andrew Vaughn, another right-handed first baseman. His exclusion from the NLDS roster stemmed from a lack of positional versatility compared to other options.
Murphy explained that Brandon Lockridge earned the spot due to his speed and ability to cover multiple outfield positions. As the Brewers prepare to face Los Angeles in Game 1, the team announced its NLCS roster — and once again, Hoskins was left off. Despite being fully healthy, he remains on the outside looking in as Milwaukee prioritizes flexibility.

Hoskins will remain ready on the bench and will likely be the next man up if Milwaukee suffers an injury to a position player. Throughout 90 games this year, the 32-year-old first baseman owned a .237 batting average, .332 on-base percentage, .748 OPS, 12 home runs and 43 RBIs.
Due to the extreme amount of depth the Brewers feature, Hoskins has become the odd man out. Hoskins debuted with the Phillies in 2017 and spent six seasons in Philadelphia, where he became a fan favorite. After signing with Milwaukee ahead of the 2024 season, he transitioned to first base and posted solid numbers.
He holds an $18 million mutual option for 2026, and his future with the club remains uncertain. For now, he will stay ready as a potential injury replacement, hoping for another shot in October.
The Brewers host the Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS at 8:08 p.m. ET on TBS.
