The Milwaukee Brewers have emerged as one of baseball’s biggest surprises in 2025, entering Saturday’s matchup against the Washington Nationals with a National League-best 65–44 record.
A key factor in their rise has been the breakout performance of right fielder Sal Frelick, the club’s first-round pick in 2021.
After debuting in 2023 and winning a Gold Glove in 2024, Frelick faced mounting pressure to contribute more offensively. He’s responded in a big way this season, posting a .292 batting average and a .756 OPS—by far the most productive offensive stretch of his young career.
Frelick’s momentum was briefly halted before the All-Star break when he sustained a Grade 1 left hamstring strain while making a sliding catch in foul territory.
He was placed on the 10-day injured list and returned on July 26, though he admitted the hamstring was still bothering him slightly.
That lingering discomfort may have played a role in his early exit from Saturday’s game, when he was removed in the fourth inning with teammate Brandon Lockridge pinch-hitting.
Moments later, the team announced, “Sal Frelick was removed from today's game as a precaution due to left knee soreness.”

With Frelick’s status now uncertain, Milwaukee’s outfield depth is being tested. Fellow breakout star Jackson Chourio is already sidelined with a more severe right hamstring strain and may not return for at least a month. Chourio recently received a PRP injection but has yet to resume baseball activities, leaving the Brewers without two of their most dynamic young outfielders.
Frelick’s availability will be closely monitored in the coming days, especially with the Brewers locked in a tight NL Central race.
Despite holding the best record in the National League, Milwaukee leads the surging Chicago Cubs by just one game in the division. How Frelick responds to this latest setback could have major implications for the Brewers’ postseason hopes.
