Earlier in the week, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic reported the Braves were among the team’s interested in trading for Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.
“The Freddy Peralta talks are about to resume in earnest. Both New York clubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox are among the teams showing interest. Some low-revenue clubs that can absorb Peralta’s $8 million salary are in play as well.”
On Saturday, the two added to the story in regards to what the Brewers would want in return: a major-league ready starting pitcher that could replace Peralta in the rotation immediately.
“The Atlanta Braves (JR Ritchie), New York Yankees (Carlos Lagrange, Elmer Rodríguez), Boston Red Sox (Payton Tolle, Connelly Early) and Los Angeles Dodgers (River Ryan, Emmett Sheehan, Gavin Stone) are among the other clubs with the ability to entice the Brewers — again, assuming they are willing to make that type of move,” the two reported.
“The Braves, with age and injury questions in their rotation, might be reluctant. Ditto for the Red Sox, who already have parted with young pitching in trades for first baseman Willson Contreras and pitchers Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo.”
Eventually, the Braves must take a big swing for a starting pitcher. Chris Sale has been unbelievable for them in his first two seasons with the team, one of the best pitchers in baseball over that stretch, but he’s not getting any younger and will be a free agent at season’s end. Atlanta will need to replace him, and getting a jump start on that this offseason would make things a lot easier moving forward.
JR Ritchie has the ability to be a staple in Atlanta’s rotation for years to come. He’s coming off his first fully healthy season since Tommy John surgery and was absolutely brilliant on the farm, posting a 2.64 ERA over 140 innings, working his way up from High-A Rome all the way to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Ritchie is now universally considered a top-100 prospect and is expected to make his MLB debut in 2026. That is not the kind of prospect you give up for a one-year rental. So, if the Braves were to consider making a trade like that, they would have to have a good feeling about re-signing Freddy Peralta soon after the deal was complete.
