The Milwaukee Brewers fell short of their comeback attempt in Game 1 of their National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night at American Family Field.
It was a tense battle from start to finish, with the Dodgers scoring first with a solo Freddie Freeman home run in the sixth inning. Los Angeles added to its slim lead in the ninth inning when Mookie Betts drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Dodgers a 2-0 cushion that turned out to be pivotal in the reigning World Series champion’s 2-1 victory in the series opener.
Trailing the Dodgers by two runs at the bottom of the ninth inning, the Brewers cut that deficit in half with a Jackson Chourio sac fly RBI off LA pitcher Roki Sasaki. That was followed by walks by Christian Yelich and William Contreras to load the bases, along with Isaac Collins, who got issued a free pass earlier in the inning.
With the bases loaded and the Brewers down to their last out and strike, Turang faced an 85 mph sweeper from Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen, who nearly hit Treinen for what would have been a game-tying HBP.
However, Turang’s instincts kicked in, as he got out of the way for a 2-2 count. A pitch later, Turang struck out on a 95 mph four-seamer from Treinen, who came away with the save.
“You turn your leg, you wear it,” Turang said after the game, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). “Just like a natural reaction to get out of the way. The last pitch, he’s a big sinker guy. He threw a four-seamer up at the top. That’s just what it is. You move on. As much as it sucks, you move on.”
Turang has been hit by a pitch just five times so far in his MLB career, which started in 2023. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Game 1 and will look to be better this Tuesday night in Game 2 of the series.
