The Milwaukee Brewers are in a bad spot, down 0-2 to the Dodgers and hitting the road, but hey, they’re still playing. How many teams can say that when MLB starts dropping award finalist lists in mid-October?

The Brewers happen to have two entries in the category of Gold Glovesmen, with a full list of finalists announced Wednesday afternoon. The two: Brice Turang at second base and Sal Frelick in right field. Fans might not feel like celebrating right now, but seeing a pair of deserving Brew Crewers served up some recognition is a nice change of pace amid all the postseason dread and apprehension.

Turang and Frelick get the nod, Ortiz overlooked

Both Turang and Frelick were Gold Glovers last season, with Turang taking home a Platinum award. Amidst career-best offensive campaigns, both were excellent in the field once again in 2025. Per Baseball Info Solutions data, Frelick saved nine runs in right while Turang accounted for seven runs saved at second.

Interestingly, Statcast credits Turang with -1 outs above average and no runs saved. Frelick gets a grade of +7 OAA and six runs saved. Playing center field in Game 1 against the Dodgers, his all-out effort and strong right arm helped orchestrate the first 8-6-2 double play in postseason history.

Along with Frelick, Arizona’s Corbin Carroll and San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. made the cut as finalists in right field. At second base, Miami’s Xavier Edwards and the Cubs’ Nico Hoerner, a 2023 Gold Glover, are Turang’s rivals. Unless something crazy happens, Hoerner would seem the clear-cut frontrunner to repeat after an otherworldly season that led to 17 saved runs and a 2.2 dWAR.

Elsewhere on the Brewers roster, shortstop Joey Ortiz is one name many fans might nominate at his position. By Baseball Info Solutions, he actually cost the Brewers two runs, but Statcast credits him with 10 runs saved and 12 OAA. Go figure.

Despite passing the eye test and his sparkling Statcast figures, Ortiz was passed over among finalists in favor of the Cardinals’ Masyn Winn, the Braves’ Nick Allen, and the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts.
