Brewers call up top outfield prospect Luis Lara

The Milwaukee Brewers' success this season has come from their young players coming up and producing, and that trend will continue on Tuesday.

The Brewers announced that top prospect Luis Lara will make his MLB debut against the St. Louis Cardinals. The 67th-best prospect in Major League Baseball, according to MLB.com, Lara proved that Triple-A was no competition for him, slashing .321/.432/.470 with a .902 OPS and nine home runs in 78 games.

The No. 4 prospect in the Brewers' system, Lara won a MILB Gold Glove in 2025 and was signed to a lucrative extension in late May, agreeing to a seven-year ($37 million) contract.

Lara was the second prospect in the Brewers' system to sign a long-term deal before hitting a big-league field. Shortstop Cooper Pratt, who made his MLB debut in June, signed an eight-year ($50.75 million) contract earlier in the season.

Luis Lara's skillset should add to the Brewers' outfield

A dynamic player, Lara's skills with handling the bat and ability to steal bases (24 stolen bases, caught seven times) add to the Brewers' already athletic outfield. Lara joins Jackson Chourio in left field, Garrett Mitchell in center field and Sal Frelick in right field.

A natural center fielder, Lara could push Frelick out of right field given his struggles at the plate this season. Frelick is batting .242 with a .643 OPS (career-worst), with even rougher numbers against left-handed pitchers, including a .188 average and .520 OPS.

Lara is a switch-hitter and has shown that he can handle both lefties and righties, hitting .358 in 67 at-bats against left-handers and .309 in 220 AB against right-handers at Triple-A.

Frelick's average against fastballs is also down dramatically this season. Facing 1,375 fastballs in 2025, Frelick batted .281 with a .367 slugging percentage, while he's down to a .237 batting average and .308 slugging percentage against fastballs this season (726 pitches).

Chourio is also already locked into a long-term deal with the team.
