Brewers Make Move After Brandon Woodruff’s Activation

The Milwaukee Brewers reinstated right-hander Brandon Woodruff from the injured list ahead of their series opener in Cincinnati, optioning left-hander Drew Rom to Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move.

Woodruff is immediately expected to rejoin the rotation and take the mound for the series opener against the Reds, marking his return to big-league action after an extended absence.

The timing is significant, with Woodruff stepping directly into a division matchup right out of his activation.

Woodruff's injury dates back to April 30 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, when he left the game after his fastball velocity dropped and his shoulder began bothering him. He was later diagnosed with shoulder inflammation, and an MRI showed no structural damage.

What looked like a short absence ended up stretching closer to two months. During that time, the Brewers managed his recovery carefully, working him through bullpen sessions and rehab starts to rebuild his arm strength and get his fastball back to where it needed to be.

Before the injury, Woodruff was pitching well, posting a 2.33 ERA over his final four starts at the top of Milwaukee's rotation. His career, though, has been defined by both talent and health concerns, with injuries limiting him in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Despite that, the Brewers have continued to count on him as a key part of their staff given his track record as a two-time All-Star with postseason experience. He is signed to a one-year, $22 million contract, a reflection of how much the team values him when healthy.

Woodruff's return comes at an important moment for the Brewers, who have been forced to navigate rotation instability due to injuries affecting multiple arms, including Quinn Priester, Logan Henderson and Coleman Crow. All three of those arms have not been options, and Priester is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Despite those setbacks, Milwaukee has remained one of the best teams in baseball, posting one of their best records through its first 70 games in franchise history while leaning on bullpen depth and spot starts to cover the gaps.

The hope is that Woodruff's presence can lengthen the rotation, reduce bullpen strain and restore a reliable top-of-the-rotation arm. If he can regain his pre-injury form quickly, his return could make an already strong Brewers team even tougher to beat down the stretch, starting with this series against division rival Cincinnati.
