Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy strongly criticized reliever Abner Uribe after the right-hander made inappropriate gestures toward the St. Louis Cardinals dugout during Tuesday night’s 6-0 victory.
Uribe closed the eighth inning by striking out Alec Burleson on a called third strike with runners on first and second. After the strikeout, Uribe turned toward the Cardinals dugout and made three crotch-chop gestures as he walked off the mound.
The Cardinals challenged the pitch, but replay review confirmed that the ball clipped the bottom of the strike zone for strike three. Murphy made it clear after the game that he did not support Uribe’s actions.
According to Brewers Beat reporter Curt Hogg, Murphy said the celebration embarrassed him and did not reflect how the organization wanted its players to behave, especially during a comfortable 6-0 game.

Murphy added that the team would not tolerate that kind of conduct. The 67-year-old also stressed that he still supports Uribe as both a player and a person. He described the reliever as someone who brings many positive qualities to the clubhouse but said emotions crossed the line Tuesday night.
Uribe later apologized through an interpreter, though he also suggested frustration from Monday’s game contributed to his reaction. The 25-year-old claimed Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol made gestures during the previous game that led him to believe St. Louis wanted Brewers hitters intentionally thrown at.
The Dominican declined to explain further, and Marmol said after Tuesday’s game that Milwaukee handled the situation internally. He declined to comment on Uribe’s antics and said he was unaware of the accusation before speaking with reporters. The incident adds another controversy to Uribe’s career after he was suspended for six games and fined following a benches-clearing altercation against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Uribe remains one of Milwaukee’s hardest-throwing relievers despite occasional struggles with command and control. The right-hander entered Wednesday holding a 2-2 record with a 4.42 ERA and 28 strikeouts across 18.1 innings in 20 appearances this season.
The Brewers still dominated Tuesday’s game behind strong pitching and timely hitting. Milwaukee improved to 32-20 and strengthened its lead in the National League Central standings.
Christian Yelich continued his productive season by collecting two hits and driving in a run. The former MVP entered Wednesday batting .301 with 11 home runs, 37 RBIs, and an .878 OPS.
Brewers pitchers carried a 3.49 team ERA into Wednesday, ranking among the best marks in the National League. The Cardinals struggled offensively throughout Tuesday’s loss and managed only four hits against Milwaukee pitching.
Burleson’s strikeout against Uribe ended one of St. Louis’ few late scoring threats. The Brewers have now won nine of their last 12 games as they continue building momentum in the division race.
