The Milwaukee Brewers released infielder Luis Rengifo after 57 games with the organization, officially ending his brief tenure less than a season after signing him in free agency.

Rengifo was designated for assignment June 16 before clearing waivers and becoming a free agent eligible to sign with any of the 30 MLB teams.

Across 57 games and 209 plate appearances, Rengifo hit .205/.280/.254 with zero home runs and nine doubles. The production was well below league average and he never found consistency at the plate from either side during his time with the club.

Milwaukee signed Rengifo in February to a one-year, $3.5 million contract as a depth addition in the infield. The deal included a $10 million mutual option for 2027, which will not be exercised following his release.

He was deployed primarily as a utility option at second base and third base as the Brewers rotated infield combinations through the first half.

Before joining Milwaukee, Rengifo spent seven seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. In 2022 to 2024, he hit .273/.323/.431 and grading out as an above-average hitter during that stretch.

His production declined in 2025, and that downturn carried into his 2026 performance with the Brewers, ultimately leading to his designation.

The decline was notable considering how productive Rengifo had been just two years prior. From 2022 to 2024 he was one of the more underrated utility options in the American League, providing positional flexibility and consistent contact.

The Brewers clearly bet on that version of him returning when they signed him in February, and at $3.5 million, it was a low-risk move.

But the bat never came around, and Milwaukee is not a team willing to carry a below-average hitter in a meaningful roster spot given how competitive they have been this year.

Milwaukee's corresponding move was to promote infield prospect Cooper Pratt to fill the roster vacancy, giving the club another internal option as they continue to manage depth. Pratt is one of the Brewers top prospects, and he is already locked in long-term.

The Brewers entered Tuesday with a 47-29 record, holding first place in the NL Central and one of the better marks in all of baseball. At 29, Rengifo exits Milwaukee after back-to-back seasons of declining offensive output. Any future opportunity will likely come in the form of a minor-league contract unless a club targets him as a low-cost depth option.
