Milwaukee Brewers fans found little comfort in Wednesday’s win over the Philadelphia Phillies after Christian Yelich was scratched from the lineup with low back soreness, the same issue that cut his 2024 season short following surgery.

The setback adds to a mounting list of blows for Milwaukee, including injured list stints for Jackson Chourio, Joey Ortiz, and All-Star closer Trevor Megill, along with the loss of Trade Deadline acquisition Shelby Miller for the year just as the bullpen needed reinforcements most.

Yelich has been battling back pain since the Arizona Diamondbacks series, according to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and he will stay out of the lineup for Thursday’s finale against the Phillies.

The Brewers expect the former MVP back for the upcoming series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Todd Rosiak reported the team feels confident the three-time All-Star will stay on the field for the remainder of the season.

Christian Yelich with the Brewers

Yelich responded to surgery with his strongest season since 2019, when he finished as NL MVP runner-up. Now in his 13th year, he has tallied 27 home runs, 92 RBI, 82 runs scored, and a 3.3 bWAR across 132 games. Time after time, he has delivered in big moments during Milwaukee’s historic campaign, helping the Brewers surge past the Chicago Cubs to claim the top spot in the NL Central.

Even with a slight dip in August, the Brewers still hold the best record in baseball and maintain a six-game cushion over the Cubs in the division. They opened their series against the Phillies on a strong note, knocking Taijuan Walker out after four innings by tagging him for five runs. Yet Philadelphia erased Milwaukee’s fast start and clawed back to secure a 10-8 win.

The Brewers evened the series Wednesday without Yelich, seizing control early with a five-run first inning. The Brewers kept the pressure on, tagging Aaron Nola for six runs on six hits across five innings.

Jose Quintana notched his eighth quality start of the year, giving up three runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings, and the Brewers’ bullpen shut down Philadelphia the rest of the way to secure a 6-3 victory.
