Brewers Survive Historically Close Playoff Bout With Padres

The Milwaukee Brewers came out on top in their taut NLDS battle with the San Diego Padres, beating the Padres 3-1 at Petco Park on Wednesday night.

After winning three of their four games against the Padres, the Brewers will advance to the NLCS for a rematch with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who beat them last year en route to another World Series title.

Meanwhile, this marks the third straight year that San Diego failed to advance past the NLDS.

On the bright side for the Padres, however, all four games were incredibly close. The first three games were all decided by one run, while the fourth was decided by two.

In fact, neither side led by more than two runs at any point during the series. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this was only the second postseason series of at least three games in MLB history in which no team led by more than two runs. It hadn't happened since the 1915 World Series, all the way back in the Deadball Era.

Both San Diego and Milwaukee have great pitching staffs, which kept the games close and low-scoring. The two sides were also evenly matched.

When it comes to playoff baseball, games and series are often won and lost on the margins. This one could have gone either way, but the Brewers did just enough to win.
